Photo Of The Day Arkansas State Fair Several efforts had been made since the 1800s to establish a state fair in Arkansas. The gathering now known as the Arkansas State Fair and Livestock Show started in North Little Rock (Pulaski County) in 1938. Opening as the Arkansas Livestock Show, it ran from November 9 to November 13. Only 17,000 people attended, and the show lost $23,000. In 1939, the fair and show were moved back a month, to mid-October, for better weather. This photo from the first five-day event in 1938 appears to depict a showing of horses. learn more This Day in Arkansas History May 10, 1875 Judge Isaac Charles Parker, popularly known as the “hanging judge” of Fort Smith (Sebastian County), held court for the first time. Appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant as a judge for the Western District of Arkansas in 1875, he was the youngest federal judge on the bench when he arrived in Fort Smith. During his tenure, Judge Parker sentenced 160 to die on the gallows (only seventy-nine were actually hanged) and, though he had his critics, is widely credited with bringing law and order to the frontier. learn more Our Sponsors Major support provided through a partnership with the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism.
